Why AI & Data roles are changing the hiring conversation
What the old conversation was
Hiring a developer meant checking three things:
- Which stacks do they know? React, .NET, Python, SQL, Azure
- How good is their code? Clean, tested, maintainable
- Can they solve a problem on their own? Give them a ticket and it comes back closed
The interview matched that. A live coding task, questions about a framework, maybe a system design round. You were measuring what one person could produce with their own hands.
What the new conversation is
Those three still matter. They are now the technical entry requirement. On top of them, companies are asking:
- Can this person get useful work out of AI tools, use them to work faster?
- Can they tell when the AI output is wrong, and fix it before it ships?
- Can they still explain and own the result, even though they did not write every line?
- Can the whole team work this way, or only one enthusiast?
What the numbers say about hiring for AI and data roles
PwC’s 2026 Global AI Jobs Barometer, based on more than a billion job adverts across 27 countries, puts the average wage premium for AI skills at 62%, up from 57% a year earlier. Roles that require those skills are growing at 69%, against 9% for the wider jobs market.
Denmark carries that pressure on top of an existing gap. IT-Branchen puts the immediate shortfall in the Danish IT sector above 7,000 specialists, and IDA expects it to pass 20,000 within fifteen years.

Where the advantage comes from
Hiring AI and data roles pays off through capability, not headcount. Eryk builds remote data and AI teams from its IT Service Centre in Lagos: Power BI, data engineering, data science, machine learning, MLOps and AI engineering. Nigerian specialists working to Scandinavian delivery standards.
Vald. Birn A/S already runs this model. The Eryk team designed data products across production, maintenance and quality, including real-time material usage monitoring, OEE reporting for maintenance and maintenance cost analytics, using Microsoft Fabric, Azure SQL and Power BI. It continues as ongoing delivery rather than a closed project.
Where you would rather build the capability in-house, the Whitecoding Trainee Program places young Nigerian engineers into your real project work. Your senior engineers train them on your stack through pair programming. Eryk’s coach owns the trainee’s personal development and wellbeing around that work. You end up with engineers who know your systems, and a reason for them to stay.
Either way, the operations get smarter, and the delivery gets faster. That is the advantage the hiring conversation is really about.
